Bookworms

I wrote and edited over fifty titles in several different series for Bookworms.  These books are for grades K-2 and are twenty-four pages each.  I’ve written books about salmon, chocolate, and bayous, among many other things.  I’ve really enjoyed writing these titles, as these were the kinds of books that helped our son learned to read when he was in kindergarten and first grade.

The Pros and Cons of Wind Power

I really didn’t have an opinion on wind power before I began researching it.  But, spoiler alert:  there are more pros than cons.  Along the way, I learned the phrase “The Dutch built Holland;” that wind turbines don’t kill many birds, but they do kill a worrisome number of bats; and all about Charles Brush, who built the world’s most awesome windmill in 1888.

Abraham Lincoln, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the Thirteenth Amendment

I really enjoyed writing this one.  I learned so much about Lincoln and the maneuverings it took to get to the Emancipation Proclamation.  Did you know that upon Lincoln winning the presidential election, his bitter rival Stephen A. Douglas became his ally?  Lincoln then sent Douglas to the frontier to help campaign for abolition of slavery.  Douglas died shortly thereafter.  There’s a lesson in there somewhere.

Investing Your Money

Alright, I’ll go ahead and say it:  no one likes the picture of the kid on the cover.  But he’s holding a ten dollar bill because he’s invested wisely.  He doesn’t care what you think.  Also:  invest in savings bonds.  This was my first book for Cavendish, because of my unusual combination of degrees in finance and writing.  I had never really planned on writing children’s nonfiction, but the whole process was interesting and genuinely fun, encouraging me to keep doing it.  I (re)learned a lot about the fundamentals of writing by completing this book.
